Brief History of the School

Data from: Mrs. Teresita De Mesa Cadicoy (Retired School Principal of Sabang ES)

In June 1945, in a small nipa house, which was a “bagoongan*” at that time, fifty pupils had their first formal schooling. It was known as Sabang Community School. The first teacher was the late Miss Salome Rances from Catabangan, Ragay, Camarines Sur. She had a short stay because in the middle of the same year she was replaced by Miss Lagabong from Baho (now San Juan) of Del Gallego. She was replaced again by Mr. Manuel Ubante. It was October of the same year when Mr. Dominador Talan took the place of Mr. Ubante. The following month, Mr. Dominador Corralde, the Public Schools District Supervisor visited the school and found out that there were 80 pupils under the advisory of Mr. Talan. The District Supervisor decided to divide the class into two, the bright ones as Grade II and the remaining as Grade I.

During that time, Del Gallego was still a part of Ragay District. The principal was Mr. Bernabe Agliam and the PSDS was Mr. Dominador Corralde. In 1946, Mr. Eugenio Juarez and Mr. Apolinar Minor took over the classes. Mr. Marcelino Maras came in as in-charge of the school. He initiated the opening of the Grade V class and the addition of one HE teacher. Ms. Conchita Ubalde handled the H.E. (Home Economics) class. In 1947, Mr. and Mrs. Neopita Tipay of Ragay, also taught in this school. The following year Mr. Masol came to replace Mr. Talan who will continue his studies in Manila. In the year 1950, the former Rosalina Sebello now the late Mrs. Rosalina de Mesa handled the Grade V class.

Due to the rapid increase of pupils, another school building was constructed through the effort of the PTA headed by the late Mr. Melecio de Mesa. The following years were struggling and challenging as pupils and teachers come and go. The school continued to support the ever-growing population until the early part of 1971 when it became a complete elementary school.

At present, Sabang Elementary School is the third biggest school in Del Gallego District having an enrolment of almost 300+ pupils. There are 12 class advisers and a School Principal headed by Mrs. Vilma E. Flores. Now, the school is looking forward for more success with the help of the PTA, stakeholders, the Barangay officials, the local government, and the national government.

*bagoongBagoóng (Tagalog pronunciation: [bɐɡuˈʔoŋ]buh-goo-ONG) is a Philippine condiment partially or completely made of either fermented fish (bagoóng isdâ) or krill or shrimp paste (bagoóng alamáng) with salt. The fermentation process also produces fish sauce known as patís. The preparation of bagoóng can vary regionally in the Philippines. [Bagoong - Wikipedia]
